Shane Carruth's first movie, Primer, was one of the most talked-about sci-fi movies of the 2000s, a dense, extremely complex micro-budget time travel movie with big ideas that far surpassed its shoestring conception.

His second time behind the camera is a much more technically lavish yet barely less-complicated effort, revolving around two disaffected souls (Carruth and Amy Seimetz) who become involved with a mysterious parasite.

Again, it's better to go into Upstream Color knowing as little as possible, and being comfortable with the fact that you may emerge feeling like you know little more.

It is an extraordinarily labyrinthine film with no audience spoon-feeding whatsoever, but the meditative visuals and fascinating ideas make it an absolutely entrancing sit regardless.
