Ghost In The Shell Review: 8 Ups & 4 Downs
1. The PG-13 Rating Isn't A Problem
Aside from the whitewashing controversy, another issue fans latched onto was that pesky PG-13 rating, because this is after all a niche property that's a considerable financial risk for Paramount.
The thing is, watching the movie, the PG-13 rating doesn't feel remotely problematic. It's still propulsively violent (thanks to so many of the characters being at least partially robotic), and The Major still wears her skin-tight suit.
An R-rating would've added some nipples and exploding body parts but not much else. Is that really worth getting worked up about, especially considering how fan-servicey the almost-nudity of the original movie is anyway?
The PG-13 rating means the movie looks as gorgeous as it does, which is ultimately more important than some light-ish doses of gore and sexuality.
