13. The Setting...Whatever It Is
One of the most curious aspects of the movie is its setting. The anime took place in a cyberpunk version of Japan, though with the live-action film being shot in New Zealand and touting a huge international cast, not to mention producer Steven Paul calling the setting an "international world", it really could end up being anything.
Yes, we can see Major walking down a street that looks very distinctly Japanese, but it's entirely possible that its futuristic style will give way to an entirely new locale that's basically a melting pot of various different cultures (in much the same way that Blade Runner's Los Angeles has a prominent Japanese influence).
In short, we'll just have to wait and see, but it certainly looks buzzing, vibrant, and neon-infused.
