Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trailer Review - 7 Ups & 4 Downs
6. It's Different Enough
To a certain extent, if this had just been a Ghostbusters 3 teaser that focused on what the old guys are up to now while drip feeding a new family in the place of Sigourney Weaver (and thus at the heart of the haunting), some people would have just complained that we were getting a retread. Anyone with an axe to grind about the abandonment of Paul Feig's 'Busters timeline would probably have taken specific issue with that.
And while there's a line in there about there not being a ghost sighting in thirty years as a means to remind us that that timeline is DEFINITELY separate, there's also a very obvious commitment to difference in this trailer that was always going to be a good idea.
A Ghostbusters movie that forgot the past 30 years would have been silly and given the way some belated franchise trade-ins have gone recently, this HAD to justify its own existence as a stand-alone story first and foremost. And adopting such a noticeably different tone was the perfect way to do so.
