Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trailer Review - 7 Ups & 4 Downs

5. The Stranger Things Vibes

It's not just that Finn Wolfhard is in there - there's definitely a sort of Super 8/ Stranger Things vibe that should be weaponised in the marketing. The trailer is seen through the eyes of kids who are outsiders, who uncover a mystery beneath their town and team up to tackle it themselves and with the help of a charming adult with useful skills.

Throw in some supernatural elements, conspiracy theories, a hell hound, the implication of a divorce and broken families as a whole and you've got the entire Amblin model that Stranger Things was also built on. If you've not been keeping up, this is EXACTLY where this film should be aiming. It worked for It incredibly well, after all.

While the later marketing - and the film itself - will no doubt throw in more recognisable old Ghostbusters things, leading in with something that's worked so well elsewhere and will fit with the pillars this universe was built on is strong. It almost feels like this is fan fiction made by the kids in the 1980s who played at being Ghostbusters and that's really not a bad thing.
