Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Review - 4 Ups & 6 Downs
2. The Sloppy, Chaotic Third Act
Even the lesser Ghostbusters films usually manage to do something fun and wacky with their third act, but Frozen Empire really whiffs it here as well.
Even if you can accept how generic its villain is, the actual set-piece of Garraka turning NYC to ice and the Ghostbusters teaming up to battle him is a rushed mess.
Many of the most memorable shots from the climax featured in the film's marketing have been bafflingly cut from the final product - perhaps in order to trim down the "scariness" a little - and it simply doesn't do anything basically fun, exciting, clever, or even scary with the setup.
And yes, we're apparently still doing doomsday sky-beams in 2024.
Also, as the titular cold snap only happens at the very end of the movie, it feels like director Gil Kenan decided to race through the scripted beats as fast as possible in order to keep the VFX budget down. It's a climax that slips from memory within minutes of the movie ending.
