In this horrific day and age of endless sequels and reboots, there's no doubting the fact that Ghostbusters was intended as a franchise-starter of the colossal kind. Amy Pascal, former CEO of Sony Pictures, hasn't been shy in admitting such things, and recently claimed that "[the franchise] is going to be endless. People are going to love this movie so much that’s they’re going to demand more and more.”

So, yeah, it's a film that designed to pave the way for more adventures with these characters, and according to a large portion of critics it's successful in doing so.

As Alex Welch explains in his review for GeekNation:

"If the goal of the latest outing was to make me interested and excited to see this team come together again, then I’d be willing to say that the Ghostbusters reboot is a success in its own right."

From the uproar that has been circulating around the internet for the past year or so, it's certainly surprising to learn that Ghostbusters isn't the disaster that the haters were utterly convinced it was going to be - that, instead, it's a film that works as both a reboot of a beloved franchise and is genuinely worthy of a follow-up!
