19. Meet Holtzmann

Now it's time for the obligatory roll-call, with random bits of dialogue are cribbed from various scenes to introduce all the new characters (even though we've already seen all four of them). First for the honour is Holtzmann, described by Abby as "a brilliant engineer", which, if her yellow googles hasn't already clued you in to, makes her the tech expert.

This device shows up a couple of times in the trailer, so it's likely going to be something pretty important in the bigger picture. Either that or the film's going to have several incongruous shots of some random thing interspersed throughout because Paul Feig thought the set designers did a stand-up job.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's a spectral device that operates similarly to a traditional bear trap - a spirit passes over the central detector and the machine snaps shut, pinning it there with those green beams (lasers means futuristic science, after all).

The danger with having anything approaching parallels with the original cast means the movie could become bogged down in comparisons. Thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case - Holtzmann has a definite jokey side alongside her engineering brilliance.
