Godzilla: 20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know

6. How Big Is Godzilla?

Originally, Godzilla was described as being 164ft (50 meters) and weighing 22,000 tons. The reason Godzilla is 50 meters is because the director wanted him to be just tall enough to peer over the tallest building. The director thought this would build the maximum level of tension for the audience.

However, Godzilla increases in size throughout the series because skyscrapers have gotten bigger over the years. 50 meters used to be tall half a century ago but it’s 1/10th the size of skyscrapers of today.

When the original film was released in the United States, the dub stated that Godzilla was 400ft tall (122 meters) since American buildings were far taller than Japanese ones.

In the 2014 reboot, Godzilla is 355ft tall and weighs 81,500 metric tons. The director made him that size because he wanted him “to be so big, you could see him from anywhere in the city, but not too big that he couldn’t be obscured.”

So, the big question is, can a creature of Godzilla's size exist?

And the answer is no. Paleontologist, Mike P. Taylor, stated that a monster like Godzilla couldn't survive because its bones would be crushed like “over-ripe watermelons” by its own weight.
