Godzilla Vs. Kong: 10 Places The MonsterVerse Could Go Next

4. Godzilla - Still The Bad Guy?

It is easy to forget that, in his earliest incarnations, Godzilla was the bad guy who needed to be defeated. It was only in later films that he became a hero. In the MonsterVerse he has always been the good guy, but in Godzilla vs. Kong he starts attacking people seemingly unprovoked, raising the question as to whether he has gone bad all of a sudden. Until the reveal of Mechagodzilla, this question is one of the film's biggest mysteries.

Godzilla has always flipped between being good and evil, depending on what film or franchise he appears in. It's part of the reason he remains a pop culture icon. While throughout the MonsterVerse he has leaned towards heroism, recent examples of his mean streak include in Toho's own Shin Godzilla from 2016, and in the three-part animated Godzilla series produced by Toho Animation and Netflix.

Godzilla returning to his antagonistic roots is an enticing prospect for a franchise that has until now has revered him as a saviour. In Godzilla vs. Kong, it is simply based on misunderstanding. But if the MonsterVerse turns this status quo upside down for real, it could end up going in an exciting new direction.
