Godzilla Vs. Kong Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

1. It Works As A Standalone Monster Movie

Beyond its riveting action, the film's biggest strength is that it actually functions as a standalone movie despite being the fourth entry into the MonsterVerse.

Sure, you'll have less of a frame of reference for the returning human characters and the general mythology, but there isn't much that newcomers won't be able to grasp, so don't feel like you can't watch the movie if you missed any of the previous MonsterVerse films.

Considering the obvious editorial shrinking that went on during post-production, it wouldn't be remotely surprising if references or even subplots relating to the wider universe were actually removed.

There also aren't any credits scenes whatsoever nor any significant hints at what the future could hold for the series.

In an age where every blockbuster movie is desperate to hype up what's coming next, that's pretty refreshing, even if it may leave some fans a little concerned for the series' ongoing prospects.
