Godzilla Vs. Kong Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
3. The Frequently Lousy Script
The real source of the film's problems is, unsurprisingly, its script from Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein.
While the simple beats of the titular grudge match are laid out effectively enough, the sheer suffocating number of human-centric subplots are likely to make audiences roll their eyes on regular occasion.
The limp melodramatic asides - numerous characters have dead loved ones, of course - might be more tolerable if there was at least some memorable dialogue, but for the most part the chatter throughout is pretty rote and mechanical.
The plot and lore are meanwhile doled out through nonsense exposition, and the comedy relief gags rouse only the occasional chuckle.
Thankfully this is a film that knows to shut its mouth when the plentiful monster carnage is unfolding, but is it really so much to ask that the script doesn't read like it was typed up in a frenzy the weekend before shooting began?
