Oprah Winfrey was 2018's recipient of the annual Cecil B. DeMille award, typically awarded to a figure who has made "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment."

Winfrey receiving the award was especially poignant as she is the first black woman to ever win it, and she proved herself a thoroughly deserving winner by delivering an affecting, powerful statement about the nature of both the film industry and the world at large.

Oprah spoke of Sidney Poitier breaking down barriers for blacks in the entertainment industry before mentioning the recent passing of Recy Taylor, a black woman who was gang-raped by six white men in 1944 and never saw justice, even despite the men confessing to their crimes.

Winfrey concluded with a hopeful message for the future: "When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say 'me too' again."

There's a lot of work to be done, but as far as inspiring awards speeches go, this was incredibly genuine.
