Golden Globes 2019: 8 Ups & 7 Downs

4. Christian Bale Thanks Satan During His Acceptance Speech

A possibly-wasted Christian Bale gave the most hilarious speech of the night when he took to the stage to accept the Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) award for his portrayal of Dick Cheney in Vice.

Bale called actors "lucky buggers" for being able to do what they love for a living, before launching into a wildly self-deprecating speech, where he claimed to have cornered the market on playing "charisma-free a**holes", and suggested he might play Mitch McConnell next to a rapturous crowd response.

The best zinger of all was saved for last, though, as Bale thanked Satan for giving him the inspiration to play the part. As much of a rep as Bale has for being dour and overly serious, he was positively delightful, even charming here.
