Golden Globes 2019: 8 Ups & 7 Downs

3. Roma Wins Best Foreign Film & Best Director

Roma may have lost the Best Screenplay award to Green Book in a move that's sure to age horribly, but the film did at least win the two other awards it was nominated for - Best Foreign Film and Best Director.

Unfortunately the Globes' asinine rule that a Best Foreign Film nominee can't also be nominated for Best Picture prevented it from being nominated for the Big One, this was nevertheless a solid consolation prize, and one that was certainly well-earned despite strong competition.

Best Director is even tougher to argue with, even though it would've surprised few if Alfonso Cuarón's slower, more patient direction was pipped to the post by, say, Bradley Cooper.

Cuarón gave perhaps the most humble acceptance speech of the night, paying tribute to both his native Mexico and the tumultuous upbringing which inspired Roma's creation.
