Golden Globes 2019: 8 Ups & 7 Downs

2. Bohemian Rhapsody Wins Best Actor & Best Drama

The big surprise winner of the night was unquestionably Bohemian Rhapsody, which won both awards it was nominated for - Best Actor (Drama) for Rami Malek, and Best Picture (Drama).

Though Malek's win for his chameleonic performance as Freddie Mercury was hardly sacrilege, especially in a fairly tepid year for the category, it did still point to the Globes' tendency towards populist fare and charismatic performance over more rich and detailed character work.

But the Queen biopic beating out Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born for Best Picture is absolutely baffling.

It's by far the worst-reviewed of the five films and, with its overly simplistic screenplay and obvious direction from Bryan Singer, doesn't really feel like the calibre movie which should even be in contention in this category.

Then again, this is the organisation which nominated Burlesque, Red and The Tourist for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) back in 2011. Yikes.
