James Corden nominated for The Prom makes us question everything we know about acting.

Every year the Hollywood awards season in film & TV is kicked off with the December announcement of the Golden Globe nominations. This year those nominations came in a couple of months later than usual but many were still looking forward to them with bated breath.

Well, they are in and almost exactly aligned with what most people were predicting. Except, as always, there are a few nominations and snubs that have gone down badly. The Globes are not averse to a few surprises here and there with their nominations but in recent times the nominees have become more predictable, so it seems that this year they decided to make a few shock decisions to shake up the crowd.

In a year where film has been a far more important constant in people's home lives, the diversity of what we watch has been remarkably refreshing, and most streaming services have tried to cater for as wide an audience as possible. Traditional theatrical releases have been difficult to organise, to say the least for distributors.

So where those lucky few have seen a cinema release, most films this year have come from streaming services, which are known to give their moviemakers for more creative license in their work, since there isn't a box-office take to worry about.

Well, in a year of better diversity and easier viewing experiences for audiences, these are the worst snubs and nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press.

11. No Meryl Streep

In the history of the Globes, nobody has been more recognised for their work than the peerless Meryl Streep. With 32 nominations to her name, she is the standard set for other actors to aspire to in their careers.

She is the Lionel Messi (or Cristiano Ronaldo depending on your preference) of the acting world, so even when some of her movies have been found wanting, Meryl has often been recognised for her part aside from the rest of the film.

Which is why her absence in 2021 is so confusing. The Prom has been nominated in two other categories - Best Picture Musical Or Comedy and Best Actor Musical Or Comedy - yet, she has been overlooked.

This might be a career first for Streep, she is usually singled out for unilateral praise no matter what she does and her nomination history at the Golden Globes would suggest that it was to happen again here. To be honest, if James Corden can be nominated for THAT role, then what the heck was The Hollywood Foreign Press thinking?
