Golden Globes 2021: Biggest Surprises & The Worst Snubs

4. News Of The World Is Mostly Shut Out

A film that is wildly out of its time, News Of The World walks around in the guise of a western but has all the chops of an intimate drama about two people who both need the other. It's a road-trip drama before road-trips.

Tom Hanks plays Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a civil war veteran that goes from town to town reading the news to large gatherings of people who pay to hear it. When he comes across a girl called Johanna that has seemingly survived a raid, he is tasked to take her to those she belongs with, the only living family she has, her Aunt & Uncle.

It is a classic story that is masterfully told by Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks. However, it was shut out for Best Picture Drama and Best Actor, which isn't a total travesty considering it'll definitely compete with The Oscars' bigger Best Picture category.

What is worth saying is that the young actress Helena Zengel, who plays Johanna, has garnered a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. At the tender age of 12 and considering the level of performance she has given, The Hollywood Foreign Press have been bold in their nomination but correct in doing so.
