Golden Globes 2021: Biggest Surprises & The Worst Snubs

5. The Mauritanian Gets Recognised

The Mauritanian has been described as middle of the road, at best by several outlets. A drama that finds itself too steeped in itself to be truly great and too by the book to be a game-changer.

So, when those names dropped on the list for Golden Globe nominees, Tahar Rahim and Jodie Foster, it was a blink and look again scenario. Why has a middle of the road drama about a detainee at Guantanamo Bay been given places that should have been filled by far better performances? Where is Steven Yeun? Where is Han Ye-ri and why has her spot been filled by a multiple Golden Globe winning legendary actress?

These questions will be tough to answer for those responsible.

The worst part is that it really isn't even The Mauritanian's fault. It was put forward for awards season by those that made it, who gave it an awards season friendly release date too in trying to get it recognised.
