Alarm bells began ringing for even the most devoted Fincher fan once it was announced that Tyler Perry would be playing Tanner Bolt, Nick's hot-shot defense lawyer. After all, what's Perry famous for other than directing an endless stream of critically reviled (yet commercially successful) comedies about a large black woman (played by himself in drag) called Madea? It's not exactly the most outstanding CV, but then, as ever, Fincher's brilliant eye for casting comes through. Amazingly enough, Perry is a fine link in the supporting actor chain in Gone Girl: he delivers a confident, entertaining performance as Dunne's dour legal counsel, far away from what most would probably have expected from the actor. Hilariously, Perry said the following of working with Fincher: "If I had known who David Fincher was, and his body of work, or if Id known the book was so popular, I would have said, No...And my agent knew that! He didnt tell me until after I signed on!" And yet, Tyler, it's probably the best contribution you've made to cinema so far.
