As is to be expected, Gone Girl is another in a long line of Fincher movies that looks absolutely spectacular. The director's long-serving cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth (responsible for Fight Club, The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) once again delivers a visually rich palette which helps cement the seedy suburban underbelly at the film's core, adding another eerie level on top of what would already be exceptionally creepy even in novice DP hands. It looks fantastic, and Fincher's handle on shot selection is as studiously-observed as ever: there's never a dull moment, and even though the movie runs in at a meaty, even excessive 149 minutes, audiences likely won't feel the length half as much as they might with most other filmmakers. Neither will likely end up with a stream of awards and nominations this Oscar season (Cronenweth will be up against the visually spectacular likes of Birdman and Interstellar), but it's still fab work nonetheless.
