Having written the score for David Fincher's previous two movies, The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it was unsurprising that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (who won an Oscar for their Social Network score) decided to return to score Gone Girl, which while the most understated and least-memorable of the three scores, is still another finely atmospheric offering from the pair. Relying on slow-building synth tones and metronomic drum beats, the pair help set a palpably tense mood, one which reaches a sonic fever pitch during one late-film scene set inside a shower. The eeriness cannot be conveyed through mere text, but you'll know the moment when it comes. While the pair will be unlikely to score a Best Original Score Oscar nomination this time, it's still a strong piece of work that does absolutely everything it has to in order to crank the vibe up to 11.
