4. The Scientific Accuracies
For a film relying on so much personal drama and intensity, Gravity falls back on a lot of scientific details to help back up everything that is going taking place on screen. Right from the start each of lead characters converse in ways that aren't just personal stories or motivations, but also of the mission at hand, which is repairing a satellite. From the usage of tools, to code phrases back and forth to Mission Control, to the way gravity itself plays a vital role in how everything is affected definitely backs up the presentation. Perhaps the neatest trick Alfonso Cuaron pulled of was the absence of sound throughout. When we're in the perspective of both Ryan's point of view to the shifting of back on into space, the reliance of sound diminishes. On the outside everything is muffled and ambient at the same time. On the inside, we only hear Ryan's heavy panting and breathing. It can be a little disorientating at first, but that's how it presents itself: disorientating to the characters, with hardly any room to breathe. The spacesuits.
