Green Lantern Movie: 5 Things It Got Right

1. The Overall Premise

Green-Lantern-Movie Origin stories for superhero films are tales that are rather tough to translate to the big screen. History has proven that, and while the film industry has gotten better in recent years (Iron Man, Batman Begins), there are still those who struggle with creating the story through cinema (Fantastic Four, Jonah Hex). With this being said, as an audience, suffering through an origin story can be tedious and boring, and the creators of the Green Lantern film were overwhelmed with introducing the audience to a beloved character that's been around for decades. And maybe such was the case with Green Lantern. The character had yet to have the silver screen treatment, so it was important to give his origin story time to develop. The writers were obviously setting the stage for a trilogy of films, and thus they were burdened with giving their audience a substantial amount of history about the character in order to set up his future adventures. But the writers got it right, overall. They introduced Hal by way of the death of Abin-Sur, true to the comic book's form. The writers also laid the groundwork for the Hal Jordan/Carol Ferris/Green Lantern/Star Sapphire relationship, and they even underscored Sinestro's disbelief that a human could even become a Lantern (which is more rooted in his belief that Jordan is not worthy to wear Abin-Sur's ring, who was also Sinestro's mentor). These are all great and pivotal plot points, well thought-out and well-delivered amidst a film that just missed its mark. The creators of the film did what they could to try and make a film that was accessible to old fans and newcomers alike. Overall, the film didn't connect with everyday audiences the way Iron Man has, or the Nolan Bat Trilogy was able to do. But the film was far from bad and unworthy of the constant ridicule it receives in the pantheon of superhero films. Like this article? Let us know in the comments section below.
