Greyhound Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

2. The Messy Visual Effects

War films aren't cheap or easy to produce, especially when they're set at sea, and it's clear throughout Greyhound that its budget has been effectively stretched to breaking point.

Though there aren't ever any moments where the CGI lurches into truly hideous territory, there certainly are times where it becomes abundantly clear the film desperately needed a higher budget to fully realise its vision.

There are far too many moments where the digital artifice draws attention to itself, especially whenever Hanks and the action exist within the same frame, the Oscar-winning actor clearly being keyed into the situation via slightly unconvincing green screen trickery.

Thankfully Greyhound isn't a wall-to-wall montage of CGI naval warfare, but it does detract from the entertainment factor somewhat that the visuals don't look nearly as spectacular as they probably should.
