Easily the most baffling aspect of the entire movie is the totally thankless supporting role afforded to Elisabeth Shue, who shows up for a mere matter of minutes in a flashback as Captain Krause's girlfriend, Evelyn.

An actress of Shue's repute deserves far better than to simply share one forgettable, expository scene opposite Hanks.

The film is otherwise so intently focused on the central combat scenario that it's tough to appreciate why she's even really here, beyond allowing Apple to put a woman in the trailer.

Whatever the motivation, it's a total nothing part and one which adds very little to the film, sadly. All this flashback does is rip the audience out of the present situation with no emotional gain to compensate.
