3. Adam Warlock

A major player in almost every big cosmic storyline that Marvel have ever produced, Adam Warlock is a vital part of the milieu of the wider Marvel Universe, and a former member of the Guardians, being very well acquainted with every member of the team. A self-styled quantum magician and messianic figure, Warlock is one of Marvel€™s most mysterious and unutterably cool characters. He€™s also continually opposed Thanos throughout storyline after storyline, most memorably when the warlord was attempting to complete his collection of the great sources of cosmic power, the Infinity Gems. In the comics, Thanos seeks to collect all six Gems and combine them in the Infinity Gauntlet (which he presumably sends away for using the address on the back of the cereal packet). The Infinity Gauntlet then provides him with godlike power, which is not the best kind of power to give a crazed super-villain with a schoolboy crush on Death. How bad would it be? As a present to his would be girlfriend, Thanos uses the Gauntlet to erase half the population of the universe. That€™s right, that bad. We already know from MCU dictator-for-life Kevin Feige that the Tesseract from The Avengers and the Aether from Thor: The Dark World are two of these sources of power, and the orb that acts as the catalyst for the events of Guardians Of The Galaxy is a third. In Marvel comics continuity, Adam Warlock was the keeper of a fourth of the Infinity Gems, the Soul Gem. If, as appears to be the case, the ongoing MCU story arc details the attempt to prevent Thanos from uniting all six Gems in the Infinity Gauntlet, then frankly we would be astonished if Adam Warlock did not make an appearance at some point.
