Guardians Of The Galaxy: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Must See

10. Drax The Literal Destroyer

One of the best little jokes in Guardians Of The Galaxy is Drax The Destroyer's inability to understand figures of speech: as a fellow inmate informs Peter Quill members of Drax's race take everything literally and don't understand metaphors. So, when Star-Lord suggests that the Destroyer could get revenge on Ronan by doing the universal throat-slitting mime for killing someone, the confused alien just asks why he'd want to poke The Accuser's neck with his finger. Silly old Drax. And Dave Batista does a pretty good job with his deadpan performance, against all logical odds. This is, of course, somewhat at odds with the totally tragic past of Drax, both in the film and in the comics. In Guardians Of The Galaxy there are references to Ronan The Accuser killing his wife and child in cold blood, the murderous action that sees him seeking vengeance from the militant Kree warrior. It's actually a tad more complicated than that, something that the film makes reference to when Drax admits that even having obliterated Ronan, he still hasn't got his revenge - since he was working under the orders of Thanos, it's actually the big purple guy who needs to die to satisfy him. It was Thanos who directly killed Drax's family in the comics, and back then he was a human realtor called Arthur Douglas. The deceased Douglas has his spirit nabbed by aliens Mentor and Kronos, who place his soul in the beefcake body we're used to, assuming he had the drive to defeat Thanos and save the universe. Which he still hasn't quite done, but whatever.
