Guardians Of The Galaxy: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Must See

2. Who Is A Bad Father

The other thing that we do actually learn about Thanos on screen is that he's a terrible father. Both Gamora and Nebula are his daughters and, if you can't really see any family resemblance, that's because there isn't any. Zoe Saldana's character has green skin and facial scarring because she's the last surviving member of the Zen Whoberi, the rest of whom were wiped out by the Badoon. Thanos found her, like a kindly soul discovering an orphan left in a basket on a doorstep, and trained her to become a weapon. Karen Gillan's Nebula, meanwhile, is also from a totally different race to her supposed father and sister, what with the blue skin and cybernetic implants. We don't get much of a backstory for her in Guardians Of The Galaxy but in the comics she originally appeared as a solo space pirate, taking control of Thanos' huge Sanctuary II ship during a time when he was assumed dead (nobody stays dead in comic books, FYI) by claiming that she was his long-lost granddaughter. When he came back from the dead he was a little peeved about this implied grandparentage, and tore her a new one. Both of them have some pretty interesting histories - much like the rest of the Guardians - but it's their relationship to Thanos that is most notableabout here. Nebula seems to have suffered a similar fate to Gamora, having been swept up by the mad space titan and raised to do his bidding, and he says in front of her that Gamora's his favourite daughter. Pretty harsh.
