The undoubted inclusion of Thanos in this movie - at least as a constant presence or point of reference for his henchman - will no doubt serve as a prelude to his ultimate appearance in all his glory in the third Avengers movie. Thanos first appeared at the end of the first Avengers movie, of course, in the mid-credits scene when the Chitauri general known as the Other grovelled at his throne following his army's defeat at the hands of the titular heroic team. In that movie, Thanos was referenced a number of times by the Other when he and Loki were talking and, even if he doesn't appear on screen in Guardians of the Galaxy, those same kind of references will hopefully increase anticipation regarding his future appearances and give more of a clue about what his plans are and when he's going to strike.
