Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2: 10 Reasons The Original Is Better
5. The Tone Was Much More Consistent
Nailing the tone in a movie like this isn't easy, because as hilarious as the focal team might be, they're still criminal reprobates and, in some cases, sociopathic a**holes.
Vol. 2 makes some daring creative choices that don't really pay off well tonally. For instance, Yondu slaughters an entire ship full of Ravagers and it's painted as this cool, slick scene, yet before the audience has time to digest that act of mass murder, it's back to the requisite quips as usual.
This yo-yoing between distinct tones creates a mood whiplash of sorts, especially considering that Gunn then wants viewers to mourn Yondu at the end of the movie.
The first film accepted that the Guardians were mostly bad people but still managed to make them likeable, but here their bickering and animosity towards one another sometimes comes off as straight-up mean-spirited, which puts something of a dent in the fun time fans were surely expecting.
It's not a deal-breaker as the film is still uniformly hilarious, but there are definitely several moments that might have you raising an eyebrow at how awkwardly they play out.
