Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2: 20 New Details Just Revealed
11. Will Drax And Mantis Get It On?
The information coming out of the set visits seems to suggest that Mantis is going to be drawn to Drax most of the Guardians. Kevin Feige noted that they will have a special relationship:
“I think the relationship between her and Drax is very interesting because they’re both complete odd balls.”
But will something romantic blossom or are they drawn to each other for another reason. Gunn had this to say on their similarities:
“At the very core of Drax, he’s really just heartbroken. There’s a real innocence about Drax, and I think Mantis has that as well, and I think that’s probably where the connection would be the most. There’s just a very child-like innocence with both characters.”
So maybe not. And that's a good thing, since it might rob Drax of some of the impact of his tragic backstory.
And Gunn is also very keen to make sure his female characters are on an equal footing with their male counterparts and not simply be sexualised presences:
"For me it just strictly comes down to one thing, which is trying to make all the characters be equally characters. To have the equal amount of weaknesses and strengths, to have the equal amount of foibles. Do I think my writing as a whole has always done that? Yeah, completely. We have four primary female characters in this movie. Is that a cool thing? Yeah. And do I think that it’s cool that we have Pom- One of the things is that Mantis is just as weird and screwy as Rocket and Drax and Groot; who are all just nut-cases. Being able to have that dynamic, to me, is what’s cool about having the female characters more than having the strong females, I guess."
Having said that though, he reserves special praise for Dave Bautista's Drax, who he says has been "murdering every scene."
