Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 Review: 8 Ups & 3 Downs
1. The Emotional Punch Works Incredibly Well
As the film unfolds, it becomes very obvious how Yondu and Star-Lord's dynamic is going to play out, but the final revelation that Yondu sees himself as Pete's real dad and brought him up for that reason (rather than because he made a good thief) is very touching.
What's even more touching - right to the point of ripping your !*$% heart out - is that Yondu sacrifices himself to save his "son" as Ego's planet form is destroyed and the pair are thrust into space with only one space suit. From there until the end credits, the film is a real tear-jerker: first we get the death and their farewell dialogue, then Yondu's funeral with the Ravagers all turning up and then Peter quietly sitting listening to Cat Stevens' "Father And Son" with each turning up the threat of real, fat tears pouring down your face.
This emotional authenticity in a funny, goofy, sci-fi comic book movie is as stunningly impactful as it is surprising, and it's all testament to Gunn's ability as a story-teller who knows about heart.
