Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Trailers: 7 Reasons To Be Concerned About The Film

2. James Gunn May Have Too Much Creative Freedom

Marvel are great at taking talented, small-time directors and successfully transitioning them to the big-budget scene - just ask the Russo Brothers, or Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn.

However, though each director is allowed to flex their creative muscles on a project, each film is still heavily managed by Marvel and Kevin Feige. They have a story they wish the MCU to follow and a style they want each film to hit, and it's up to the director to adhere to the studio's vision. But with Vol. 2, it looks like Gunn is running the gamut entirely - and that could end up being a disaster.

We've seen talented directors be given too much power and produce a poor movie before. The Wachowskis with Jupiter Ascending. George Lucas with the prequels. Even Zack Snyder with Batman v Superman, the definitive example here; he was guided by Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan with Man Of Steel, but had complete control over BvS - and we all know how that turned out.

The trailers don't have a hint of the MCU anywhere, and neither will the film; Gunn has been very vocal about not including the Infinity Stones or Thanos in his movie - the trailers reinforce this - and it appears as though he's calling the shots in all areas. Hopefully, the film isn't so subversive, so irreverent and so James Gunn that it becomes alienating, and still retains that Marvel feel we've come to love over the past eight years.

He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
