Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3: Marvel "Unlikely" To Rehire James Gunn

Could the threequel be delayed?

Despite the news that Disney MIGHT be willing to talk to James Gunn about rehiring him for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 3 - and whatever wider Marvel position he was to have for future projects - and a cast letter calling for him to be reinstating by Disney, don't expect it to happen.

Variety are reporting that Disney won't budge on their initial response and Gunn won't be rehired:

"The feeling within both Disney and Marvel is that the dozens of so-called jokes that Gunn made about pedophilia and rape are unacceptable in the #MeToo era and are not in line with Disney’s family-friendly image."

The report also notes that it is believed that the cast support won't extend to anyone threatening to quit their Guardians roles. They're all contracted, after all, and would face a legal bite back if they just didn't turn up. Offering public support and walking out are vastly different.

Variety say that the letter is unlikely to save his job as Disney Studios chief Alan Horn and company CEO Bob Iger combined to decide his fate. That's too high a level for cast power to even mean anything and as Variety's source says "Disney has a different standard than other studios.” So on to the next director, then.

There's now also a suggestion that Guardians Vol 3 could end up being delayed. It wouldn't be at all surprising, given the fact that the writer and director has just left. And it's not like Marvel would jeopardise the film by rushing it too much, so it could well be that we'll see a shake-up.

Spokespeople for Disney and Marvel declined to comment on Variety's report.
