Why He Might Die

Like it or not, it fits Rockets arc that he would die. If this film looks back at his past (which is a big possibility) and if his love interest is introduced (as has been speculated), he's dead meat.

Think about it: Rocket's story has been about him going from tough, emotionally guarded loner (albeit with a single companion) who railed against the idea of being part of the new Guardians family to being part of that family. Vol 2 saw him sneering at the idea of inclusion again and it feels a lot like the pay-off to that is Rocket giving his life FOR his family.

It would also parallel Yondu's story, which would be pretty fitting given the link between the characters in Vol 2.

Why He Could Survive

Partly because it's a little close to Yondu's story, but also maybe because Disney want to make a Rocket & Groot spin-off. Then again, that could easily be a prequel.
