Why He Might Die

In short, he's the bad guy. As per the ending of Volume 2, he's being introduced as a weapon bred solely for revenge against the Guardians and his "purity" is going to make him a formidable foe. He's basically the Sovereign's Rocky Horror.

If that's all James Gunn uses him as, then he's done for. It's just not that likely that that's the way he's headed.

Why He Could Survive

While Marvel movies have a habit of killing off villains after a single appearance, Adam Warlock - as he will presumably be called in the film - is different. He's a big comic character in himself and his origin story has him breaking away from his origins as a weapon to become a hero in his own right.

There have been rumblings of a Warlock movie for years now and it's way more likely that this is an origin story for him that leads to something else.
