Guy Ritchie: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

6. RocknRolla (2008)

After the critical failings of Revolver, Guy Ritchie took a deep breath and said: "Okay, one last try. One. Last. Try." And so RocknRolla stands as his last foray into the London geezer gangster movie to date, and - for the most part - it isn't horrible. Unlike with Revolver, there's more than enough here to keep you interested for the length of its runtime, and there are good performances from Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Tom Wilkinson, Toby Kebbell and Mark Strong, all of whom feel natural to Guy Ritchie's stylish London world. Thankfully (and unlike Revolver), RocknRolla doesn't take itself too seriously - the plot isn't anything special and mostly involves a series of incidents spurred on by a gang's attempt to pay off their debts, but at least it's a lot less confusing and pretentious (almost as if Ritchie read the notes left to him by audiences who saw Revolver). The issue with RocknRolla isn't really that it's bad, then, but that it's more of the same; Ritchie simply reprising himself.
