8. Halloween: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989, Dominique Othenin-Girard)
As a kid, I remember really enjoying Halloween 4, 5, and 6 as they really explore the ideas behind what motivates Michael to do the things he does, but looking back objectively as an adult it's clear to see that Dominique Othenin-Girard's 5th installment is far too messy to be taken seriously. Picking up where part 4 ended, Michael's body is discovered by some random hermit who takes pity on the killer (we assume he has no idea who he is) and takes the comatose Myers back to his shack where he cares for him until Michael awakens and decides to repay the hermit's kindness by killing him. With his energy restored - presumably by the fact it's Halloween again - Myers returns to Haddonfield to continue his pursuit of his (apparently) only living relative, Jamie Lloyd, who is the daughter of Laurie Strode. Following the traumatic events of Halloween 4 Jamie has been sent to live in a children's psychiatric home, but her famous uncle has plans to lure her out into the open culminating in a showdown in the old (and ever changing) Myers family home. Halloween 5 is probably best remembered for the return of the infamous 'Shape' than it is the forgettable plot and the closing sequence in which Michael is arrested (what's that all about?) and thrown in a prison cell. With his rampage seemingly over, the mysterious 'Shape' shows up and frees Michael from his cage. But who is behind the jail break and why? Well, none of that would be revealed until 6 years later in Halloween 6, which did little to help this mess of a movie.
