Happy Death Day Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

3. There Are Two Pointless Subplots

Happy Death Day Jessica Rothe

Happy Death Day clocks in at just 96 minutes in length, yet is still padded out by two woefully pointless subplots.

The first is a melodramatic attempt to inject some emotion into the film, with Tree mourning the death of her mother three years prior, but it ultimately has little bearing on the overall narrative and basically feels like a lame soap opera excess.

The other subplot can't really be talked about due to spoilers, but you'll know it when you see it, because it comes totally out of left-field and takes the film on a needless tangent for about 10 minutes.

Overall, the film would feel much leaner if these plots were cut out entirely and it clocked in at a square 80-85 minutes instead.
