Happy Death Day Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
2. It's Not Really A Horror Movie
Though Happy Death Day is for all intents and purposes a horror film in its name, premise and how it's been marketed, it really doesn't feel like one all that much.
Often the killer plot is put to the wayside and the movie feels like a straight-up college-set comedy, and it likely doesn't help that the PG-13 rating further strips away most of the tension and potential terror.
Younger teens might scream at the litany of jump scares, but if you're at all savvy to the genre, the jumps probably won't catch you off-guard even once.
This combined with the focus on comedy and the lack of psychological horror or gore means that it rarely feels like a true entry into the genre.
