Harry Potter: 10 Behind The Scenes Secrets That Will Blow Your Mind
5. Building The Basilisk
Not every problem can be solved with a placeholder though, which is a lesson the production team had to learn once Harry discovered The Chamber of Secrets.
So rather than marking the various points where the Basilisk would be, the producers decided to tackle things a bit more practically by building their own version of the Basilisk from the ground up.
Fast forward a few months later and the studio has at their disposal a full-scale animatronic model of the Basilisk, which could be controlled to move both in and out of water.
Painted from head-to-toe, the monstrous contraption also came fully equipped with retractable fangs. So next time you watch Harry running for his life in this scene just know that the danger was real from the get go.
Finally, some post-production magic was then worked on the scene which included everything from overhauling the creature with a slimier texture to the addition of movements that were a lot smoother than anything an animatronic model could achieve.
And just like that fans were left with one of the most memorable scenes from the history of the franchise.
