Harry Potter: 10 Most Anxiety-Inducing Movie Moments

9. The Chess Game – The Philosopher’s Stone

The finale of The Philosopher’s Stone presented our heroes with many challenges. Fluffy, the Devil’s Snare, and the winged keys all proved to be troublesome foes, but McGonagall’s giant chess set was the most intimidating.

During this final challenge, Ron leads the charge against the white pieces. He uses his expert chess knowledge to destroy the opposition whilst simultaneously keeping his two friends out of danger. However, he soon realises he must sacrifice himself in order to claim victory.

John Williams’ score is terrific during this scene. The increasing volume of the string instruments beautifully compliments the look of terror on Ron’s face as the white queen glides forwards and pounces on her prey.

Whilst there are many nostalgic moments in The Philosopher’s Stone, the chess game holds up particularly well due to the intense atmosphere and the barbarity of the pieces.
