8. Harry Is Chased By The Basilisk – The Chamber Of Secrets
It’s safe to say the Basilisk would have murdered Harry at once had it not been for the arrival of Fawkes. But even after the giant snake was blinded by Dumbledore’s phoenix, it still proved to be a worthy adversary.
During the conflict down in the Chamber, our hero retreats into the piping and gets himself stuck at a dead end. The blinded Basilisk then follows Harry’s scent and steadily edges towards him, opening its jaws in the process.
Whilst it’s obvious Harry isn’t going to die at this point, the sight of such a monstrous creature edging towards our hero is still horrific to witness. Being trapped in such a desperate situation with no obvious means of escape is like something from a nightmare. Somehow, Harry remains focused and manages to fool the monster into going in a different direction.
