Harry Potter: 10 Worst Characters Introduced After The Philosopher's Stone

2. Lavender Brown

Lavender Brown is a popular Gryffindor and was present at all the major incidents at Hogwarts during the Second Wizarding War and the build up to it. Not that you'd know that from the films.

Lavender loved Divination and she was close with Professor Trelawney. She was initially skeptical of Harry's claims that Voldemort had returned, but quickly changed her tune and joined Dumbledore's Army.

During her sixth year, she dated Ron Weasley. Their relationship was very full-on and the two of them were consistently all over each other all the time. It didn't take long for Ron to begin feeling uncomfortable about it though. When Ron was poisoned, he began to pretend to sleep in the hospital wing to avoid having to spend time with Lavender. Lavender does all she can to try to save her relationship with "Won-Won" but eventually dumps him after seeing him leave the Common Room with Hermione. Lavender dies in The Deathly Hallows after being attacked by Fenrir Greyback - a scene which was translated to film.

It seems very strange that Lavender is such a major side character in the books, and appears at so many important moments, though she didn't appear as a proper named character in the films until Half-Blood Prince. The character had unofficially appeared in Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban played by Kathleen Cauley and Jennifer Smith, respectively. Until Jessie Cave took on the role, the character had been portrayed by people of colour, which led to a whitewashing controversy.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
