3. Hated Harry Because He Hated His Father
Snape disliked all four of the Marauders, but he hated James the most, and his hatred only intensified when he started to date Lily.
Harry, of course, looks just like his father. He’s a visual reminder that Lily had loved Snape’s greatest rival, and as such, the Potions Master takes an instant dislike to him:
“…mediocre, arrogant as his father, a determined rule-breaker, delighted to find himself famous, attention-seeking and impertinent.”
“You see what you expect to see, Severus,” said Dumbledore.
Whilst Snape’s attitude is somewhat understandable, judging someone like this is a childish thing to do. Even in the very first Potions lesson, Snape picks on Harry and embarrasses him in front of the class. And this hate-fuelled relationship only intensifies as the series goes on, accumulating with the murder of Dumbledore in The Half-Blood Prince.
Heroic though Snape undoubtedly was in many situations, he had no right to give Harry such a hard time.
