Harry Potter: 5 Reasons You Need To Rewatch The Half-Blood Prince
1. Draco Gets His Spotlight!
For the first five films of the series, Draco Malfoy is a simple and somewhat flat character. He is the schoolyard bully, infamous for his snobby behaviour and reliance on his powerful father, and there's not much else that defines him as a person. He's a bad guy, and we just don't want to like him.
However, in The Half-Blood Prince, Draco finally gets a bit of the limelight and things start to change.
This film gives his character room to breathe, and it's almost too much to appreciate in just one viewing. Throughout the story, we see a very human Draco, miles apart from the shallow bully of the previous films, and are able to observe how he deals with the pressures placed upon him by his allegiance to the Dark Lord.
He sets about trying to assassination the greatest wizard in the world, not to mention his headmaster, and its great to see the turmoil and inner-conflict it creates in him.
There are even instances where we get hidden snippets of Draco's development, like when he weeps after the bird dies when returning through Vanishing Cabinet. In just a few seconds of audio, we get a sense of the tremendous expectation for him to succeed, and we feel sympathetic towards him as a scared young man.
Sympathy? For Draco? Yes, it's really that good! The veil of being the baddie is shed from Draco's character, and we finally see him for who he really is: a confused and frightened boy, just like the other students.
The Half-Blood Prince takes the time to enrich one of its most popular yet focus-deprived characters, and in doing so takes a wonderful leap in character development that is more than worth seeing twice!
