2. Lily Potter
When Lily, along with her husband James, joined the Order of the Phoenix during the first wizarding war, she had no idea how personal the fight would soon become for her. Thanks to Snape relaying Sybill Trelawney's prophecy to the Dark Lord, Lily's son Harry became Voldemort's main target.
After fleeing to Godric's Hollow, Lily and James were betrayed by their friend, Peter Pettigrew, and were hunted down by Voldemort. James was killed first as Lily made for an escape with Harry, but they couldn't get out of the cottage in time.
Lord Voldemort offered Lily the chance to join him if she stepped from between him and her son, but of course she refused. Voldemort killed Lily, but her loving sacrifice protected her son from the Dark Lord, and actually rebounded his Killing Curse back towards him, killing his physical form and defeating the Dark Lord, at least for a few years.
Without Lily's sacrifice and the love she held for her son, Harry would have been killed, and Voldemort would have won the wizarding war. There would have been no need for a second. Along with her son, Lily is one of only two people to have ever defeated the great Lord Voldemort.
