1. Albus Dumbledore
Albus Dumbledore was one of the greatest wizards in history, and his wisdom, skill, and experience was invaluable for the defeat of Lord Voldemort. Without the Hogwarts headmaster, there would have been no Order of the Phoenix in the first place, and he had a hand in just about every major event in the fight against the Dark Lord up to his death.
During the first wizarding war, Dumbledore not only sent Lily and James into hiding, which would have saved them had Peter Pettigrew not betrayed them, he also recruited from the Death Eaters Severus Snape, a double agent that would prove himself a great asset.
Such was Voldemort's fear of Dumbledore, he never attacked Hogwarts himself while the headmaster was still alive. By simply living and breathing, Dumbledore protected the castle and all those within. He even took Voldemort on one-on-one in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, causing the Dark Lord to flee.
Not only was he the one to uncover the secret of Voldemort's Horcruxes, and with it the path to defeating him, Albus Dumbledore gave his life for the cause. Knowing that Harry had all the answers he needed to win the fight against Voldemort, Dumbledore allowed himself to be killed by Severus Snape, making the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good.
