Harry Potter New TV Show: 25 Castings That Must Happen

11. Matt Smith As Lucius Malfoy

It needs to be said that it's hard to imagine anyone doing Lucius Malfoy better than Jason Isaacs did. He was completely and utterly brilliant, and turned a character who wasn't necessarily super-memorable in the books into one of the very best villains in the films.

If the TV show wanted to recapture at least some of that magic, then Matt Smith would be a great choice for Draco Malfoy's horrible father. His tremendous performance in HBO's surprisingly great House of the Dragon felt pretty Lucius Malfoy-esque, and no, that's not just because of the hair.

As Daemon Targaryen, Matt Smith was fairly stoic but always conveyed an awful lot with his potent line deliveries, and radiated power and status every moment he was onscreen. Much of the time, Smith was thoroughly intimidating and sinister in the part, and he made every scene he was in tenser.

A similar performance would work wonders for the restrained yet commanding Lucius, and if Matt Smith was as good as he was as Daemon - and that's very likely, for Matt Smith is rarely anything less than captivating these days - then perhaps the character would get another performance worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Jason Isaacs'.
